Dear publishers, artists, writers and designers,

This 8th edition of Bergen Art Book Fair (BABF 8) will, as many other cultural events this year, be different due to the uncertainty of the ongoing pandemic. Like others, our fair will also go on online.

Taking time

BABF 8 will be accessible online for about 7 months, which allows us to experiment with the format as well as spend time with both exhibitors and visitors. The fair will be mostly active during a series of 7 events: one each month in the period of November 2020 through May 2021.

Most events will consist of a single day of programming at a time, in various venues in Bergen, but if possible, we also want to open and close with a weekend of a physical fair. For the last event date in May, we hope and will keep open the possibility to be able to invite some of you from outside of Norway to attend. In the meantime, our online fair is the safest way to participate.

A collaborative experiment

How does an online art book fair work? A webshop, a streaming-channel or an extended social media presence? We don’t have definite answers, but we have noticed that organizers around the world share similar ideas of how it could look like. However, we think time and our attention spans work differently online and in real life. Can the physical fair really be translated or replicated to work the same way online? Which aspects can and which can not? To be honest, some of us might have gotten a bit tired of being online by this point. We miss the hugs, the chatting in between programming, the morning coffee meet-ups, the eating out and the dancing — all the good social aspects of the art book fair that we will just have to wait for to come back.

Our website will be built from the ground up by programmer and designer Magnus Nyquist. Our approach is to create a digital platform that is engaging, honest, functional, and that radiates HTML.

We want you as exhibitors to be part of the discussion on digital mediation of artists’ books. To share your experience and your ideas on how to present your exhibitors page, or website functionality, with us along the way. During the half year period we will invite you to send feedback and to attend meetings with our team and programmer.

Due to this being an experiment based on extended direct communication with you as exhibitors, we will only have 35 exhibitors this year. To participate is free of charge.

Our goal is to make this online fair participation as positive an experience for you as publishers as we can, and we hope you will be part of 8th edition of Bergen Art Book Fair.
